What Comes After Wikipedia: Human-AI Collaboration

Wikipedia was an extraordinary act of human will — millions of volunteers, writing and editing in hundreds of languages across two decades, building the largest encyclopedia in history. Free. Open. Neutral. And now quietly being absorbed by the very tools it helped train.
AI answer engines — Perplexity, ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews — are siphoning Wikipedia’s traffic by summarizing it for users who used to visit directly. The cathedral is still standing. The congregation has moved on.
But Wikipedia had a deeper architectural limitation that predates any disruption from AI: it was designed to answer “what is X?” — not “how do I understand X?” It’s encyclopedic, not pedagogical. There’s no concept of reading order, prerequisites, or learning trajectory. You arrive at a Wikipedia article and you’re on your own — no scaffolding for where to go next, no signal about what you needed to know first.
Not AI-Written Knowledge
The obvious answer to “what comes next?” is that AI writes the encyclopedia. It won’t work.
AI-generated knowledge has no provenance, no genuine understanding behind the fluency, and no accountability when it’s wrong — which it will be, in ways that are particularly hard to detect precisely because the prose sounds authoritative. An AI-written Wikipedia would be the most dangerous knowledge resource ever built: smooth where it should be rough, confident where it should hedge, impossible to verify and impossible to contest.
Fluency is not understanding. Confidence is not correctness. Scale is not wisdom.
Not Just Humans Either
But humans alone can’t reach what’s needed here. Wikipedia took twenty years and millions of contributors to cover what it covers — and it still misses vast domains of specialized, hard-won practitioner knowledge: the kind that lives in people’s heads rather than textbooks, the kind that disappears when someone retires or a company folds.
We need AI to help — but not to write the knowledge. To structure it: cross-reference, surface gaps, flag inconsistencies, and maintain the scaffolding that lets human understanding stay navigable over time. The scaffolding, not the substance.
The Right Model: Human Understanding + AI Structure
Here’s what actually works, and I say this after watching earlier framings of this idea fail:
Humans provide the understanding. They’ve lived the experience, made the mistakes, built the intuitions, and earned the right to author the paths. AI hasn’t.
AI helps with structure. Consistency checking, gap detection, cross-referencing across paths, surfacing connections the author missed — this is where AI earns its place in the process.
Community provides the contestation. Experts challenge, patch, and branch. Disagreements are preserved rather than flattened into false consensus, because the friction is the feature.
The result is traceable knowledge — accountable, evolving, and honest about what it doesn’t yet know. You can see who wrote it, why they wrote it, and where they were uncertain.
This is not a utopian vision. It’s a design constraint. Knowledge that can’t be traced can’t be trusted. Knowledge that can’t be challenged can’t improve.
What This Demands
Building this kind of knowledge infrastructure is genuinely hard, and a few things cannot be shortcut:
Authorship must be preserved — not anonymized, not averaged out — because the person behind the knowledge matters as much as the knowledge itself: their context, their biases, the experience they’re drawing from.
Disagreement must be first-class. The history of knowledge is the history of productive disagreement, and systems that hide conflict are hiding understanding along with it.
The interface must reward depth. Most platforms reward brevity and engagement metrics; the next knowledge platform has to reward the slow, careful work of actually explaining something.
AI assistance must be transparent. Every place AI touched the knowledge should be visible — not because AI is bad, but because readers deserve to know what’s been structured for them and what hasn’t.
